Celebrating 70 Years of Marriage with Cecilia & R.E. Corbett
Porters Neck Village residents Cecilia and Rufus Emmett (R.E.) recently celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary, marking over seven decades of love, companionship, and support for the happy couple. Blessed with two children, four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren, join us as Cecilia and R.E. walk us through their book-worthy love story, written across over 800 handwritten letters during their three-year courtship.
The couple-to-be met on a blind double date, accompanied by Cecilia’s classmate and R.E.’s brother. Their romance, however, wouldn’t bloom for another two years, when Cecilia received a postcard from R.E., who was away at college. The two reconnected that Christmas and, in the words of R.E., “That night, I fell in love. I mean, I had it bad.”
The couple proceeded to write letters to one another over the next three years, reconnecting on the weekends and getting to attend church together. “I saved every one of the letters…And he saved what I wrote him,” Cecilia says. “[The letters were] a diary of what our families did, what we did…we just enjoyed talking to each other and being with each other.”
“It was a beautiful love affair,” R.E. adds.
Today, Cecilia and R.E. are active members of our Porters Neck Village community and continue to enjoy their rich lives together. And how has their marriage been so far? “It’s been a quick 70 years,” R.E. says.
